How to Make an English Saddle Pad

Vintage English saddle made by Kathy Wells

Need a quick and easy saddle pad for your Breyer horses? You can make one like this one, pictured here with my vintage Kathy Wells Traditional scale hunt seat saddle, out of felt. The trick is to use your saddle as a template but increase the size of the template by a few millimeters. A standard English show pad extends a few inches beyond the leather saddle, and the white fleece sort of frames the brown leather while providing padding and comfort to the horse. Saddle pads under English saddles are absolutely essential. They wick away sweat and prevent chafing and saddle sores.  So make sure your saddle pads fit your Breyers, even if they can't get saddle sores!
