Today is a special day for me. Today EquinArt Creations, my model horse company, turns 7 years old. We launched our first resin, Innocence, on this day in 2004, and received our first order, so I count September 1 as our anniversary.
There were people who said to me, "What do you know about opening a business?"
There were people who said, "It can't be done. You can't make a business out of model horses!"
Listen, when people tell you that you can't do something - do it anyway. When people ask you, "Who are you to [fill in the blank]" - DO IT ANYWAY.
If you love something, if your heart tells you to proceed with an idea, do it. (Be smart about it though - don't use that as an excuse to take foolish risks with your career, money or personal life.) I didn't quit my day job and still work on other projects even though I'm a full time freelancer now. In 2004, I used to get up at 5 am and work at EquinArt Creations until 7 am, then hastily don my business clothes and race out the door to my full time job at a big publisher where I worked full time as a marketing manager. Those were long days getting my business started, but I wouldn't trade them for all the world.
What makes a model horse business a success? I've got one word to answer that question: YOU. You, my customers, artists and friends, you make it successful. I'm glad that seven years after I saw the first sale ding into my inbox, I'm still able to do something every day that I love, namely share the beauty and fun of model horse collecting with the public and support artists with my business skills so they can enjoy the creative process.
Thank you for seven years of service, which is our motto for the month of September.
We'll be running specials over on the EquinArt Creations website to celebrate, and have a lot of great stuff coming your way, but I wanted to take this moment to say a very heartfelt thank you to you all.
